About the Helen Fowler Library

The Helen Fowler Library began in 1947 when its namesake donated her personal collection of 500 titles related to horticulture. Originally part of the Colorado Forestry and Horticulture Association, the library has been managed by Denver Botanic Gardens for more than 60 years. The library, located within the Gardens’ Freyer – Newman Center, holds a significant collection of botanical and horticultural materials about the Rocky Mountain region and similar regions around the world. The library supports research at the Gardens as well as community interests. The library also has a large collection of adult and children’s fiction, poetry, rare books, botanical-themed archival collections including postage stamps and vintage seed and nursery catalogs. Nonfiction topics range from memoirs and cookbooks to environmental justice. Visitors are encouraged to peruse the shelves, research within the Helen Fowler Library and ask questions of library staff and volunteers during open hours. Denver Botanic Gardens members may check out materials for offsite use, all others are welcome to reference materials while at the library.
