Migration and Data Manipulation

Migration and Data Manipulation

We understand how important your data is to you and your patrons. Accurate transfer of your data from your legacy ILS to Koha is our mission in the Migrations Department. The first step in the migration process is data profiling in which we gain an thorough understanding of the data you have sent us. We analyze your data to assess the quantity and quality. We identify any potential anomalies in the data and prepare a strategy for the migration process to move the data into Koha. The design of the migration process is unique to each library. No two data sets are ever the same! During the migration process, each of our new partners receives a migration test system where the migration process is fine-tuned, modified, and adjusted until the data in Koha suits your library's needs. This migration server is also used in the hands on training and for all testing the library wishes to do during the migration process.

Our Koha migration and server setup services include, but not limited to:

  • Creation of a migration Koha system to be used for training and testing
  • Transfer of data from legacy ILS to Koha
  • Koha installation and customization
  • Administrative configuration
  • OPAC customization
  • Import of patron data
  • Assistance with the import/configuration of authority records
  • External device setup such as those using SIP2 and LDAP connections

Rocio’s love of libraries first began in elementary school! She most looked forward to visits to the library and exploring the stacks for new books to read. Her passion for libraries and data grew as she held positions in archives and preservation, and through managing large data sets. Rocio has a B.M. in vocal performance from Oklahoma City University and an M.I.S. in information systems from the University of North Texas.

Data Migration Librarian

Jessica received her BA from St. Xavier University and her MLIS from Dominican University’s School of Library and Information Science. She has worked for historical societies, museums, and archives across Chicagoland, but it was in her role as a corporate digital asset management associate where she developed her passion for data organization. It was with this passion and her love of libraries that she decided to continue her career as a migration librarian for ByWater Solutions. In her free time, Jessica enjoys staying active and spending her days outdoors.

Addie received a B.A. in History and a B.A. in Religious Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As long as she can remember, her and libraries have been close friends - beginning with being an honored member of '100 Books Read' club in first grade to finishing her research in the long stacks at UNC. She is very excited to extend her relationship with libraries through Bywater. In her spare time, Addie loves exploring her home in Coastal North Carolina, traveling, and cooking!

Ian earned his MLIS and MS in Computer Science from the University of Rhode Island in 2008. While there, he worked for URI's Web Development Group, implementing blog software, project management software and anti-spam security measures. After that Ian joined ByWater Solutions, supporting hundreds of libraries, developed new features for Koha, and provided on site training for several of the company's partners. Over the last several years Ian has worked as the Web Services and Emerging Technologies Librarian at University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Data Migration Librarian

Jerry received his master's in information science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a programmer in a phase I clinical research organization, he discovered that transforming and standardizing data were actually pretty cool skills to have, but he missed the library life that was such a large part of his graduate school experience. Working at UNC-Chapel Hill’s Media Resources Center gave him experience in audio and video production, as well as web design, supervising students, and digitizing analog media. When nearby Elon University needed a Systems Librarian to help manage an ILS migration, Jerry saw the opportunity to apply his diverse skill set. Jerry is fascinated by the process of data transformation, and the unique challenges that libraries have when it comes to that process. Joining ByWater Solutions puts him in a fascinating place where data, libraries, and open source converge. Motorcycling and walking are some of the offline hobbies that keep him happy.
