ByWater Solutions Announces February 2022 Community Giveback Winner

Each month, ByWater Solutions selects one library to be awarded $500. These funds are meant to support libraries and their communities and fill gaps in funding to further library goals.

We are excited to announce our February 2022 winner of the ByWater Community Giveback, Carnegie-Stout Public Library in Dubuque, Iowa.

Carnegie-Stout Public Library is an urban library with that serves a population of about 60,000 people. We have about 40,000 active card holders. Over the past several years we have been adding unconventional items to our collection in order to meet the needs of our patrons. The items range from gardening tools and board games to fitness equipment. Recently we have been focused on adding items that can be checked out as a kit and provide the patrons with multiple activity options. Once such collection is our nature kits that include bird watching guides, hiking maps, a compass, and various other things designed to help patrons connect with nature.

Their goal for the Community Giveback project is to expand on this collection as well as to create memory care kits for older adults experiencing memory loss and their caregivers. Each kit comes complete with a guide for caregivers and multiple memory activities for those with memory loss. Some examples include music from the 40s and 50s, picture books with easily identifiable animals or places, memory games designed to help adults match shapes, colors, or pictures with words. Each kit has 5-7 different activities designed to help those with memory loss and those working with adults with memory loss. We currently have 4 kits prepared and with a $500 grant we could prepare another 4 kits for circulation. We expect these kits to be checked out by people caring for their aging parents in their home, or to take when visiting a parent in an assisted living facility. It is also possible that these kits would be checked out by staff working in assisted living facilities who are looking for activities to engage their residents.

ByWater Solutions is happy to contribute to such a great initiative to expand and diversify their collection.

We're always looking for ways to give back and create opportunities where we can to support libraries.
