The South Bay Historical Railroad Society goes live on Koha with ByWater Solutions

7d2c53ddd753e1b62459759d371c5b72ByWater Solutions, an open source community contributor and America’s forefront provider of Koha support, announced today that the Library at The South Bay Historical Railroad Society, of Santa Clara, CA. is now live on Koha! ByWater Solutions completed the migration of the library’s 4,000 plus holdings earlier this year and is providing ongoing Koha support and hosting services to them.  The Library’s customized online Koha catalog can be viewed at: http://library.sbhrs.org/

Jack Morash, Chariman of SBHRS, commented on their decision to switch to Koha with ByWater:

We are a Historical Railroad Society with large railroad library that was built by a member several years ago using File Maker Pro.  About 4 years ago we decided it was time to upgrade our library system to a real ILS.  Since we didn’t have a lot of money, I was looking for an Open Source solution and came across Koha.  At the time we had a member who was putting our website together and he put our new Koha system on an Amazon EC2 server.  After he left there was no one with the real skills to maintain the server and keep Koha updated.  It was that fact that started me looking into having our system hosted by someone else.  I had seen posts and articles by ByWater Solutions and contacted them about hosting our system. “

He continues:

“The team I worked with for the conversion was fantastic and did an absolute outstanding job of getting us up and running on new servers.  We now have a library system that we are proud of.  Now that we have pretty much got everything in and updated we will be opening our OPAC up to the public to browse our library.

About the South Bay Historical Railroad Society:
The South Bay Historical Railroad Society (SBHRS) was incorporated in 1985 to preserve the local area railroad heritage while running a working museum to benefit the community. Our members are volunteers and work on the renovation and preservation of the Santa Clara Railroad Depot, the Santa Clara Tower and the two maintenance-of-way buildings. A large and varied collection of historic railroad artifacts are on display in the Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History located in the Depot. This now includes the Oregon-Washington Railroad & Navigation business car #184 which was loaned to us and placed on our siding on June 26, 2009.

Within the Depot are two operational HO and N scale model railroad layout displays depicting various railroad eras and operations venues. Constant work by our members on these layouts provide an ever changing panorama, giving our visitors and members a better understanding of the different aspects of model railroading. The South Bay Historical Railroad Society offers something for old and young alike. Stop by and see a little bit of California history! For more information please visit: http://www.sbhrs.org/
