KohaNA 2015 started off with a keynote presented by John Brice, Director of the Meadville Library. John graciously stepped up to present a keynote when the original presenter, Ed Veal of ByWater Solutions was unable to make it to Erie in time do to travel delays.
Mr. Brice opened with an introduction of himself, the Crawford County Federated Library System, andhowCCFLS has embraced Open Source in so manyways, as well as the reasons to do so.
John discussed the various issues, whys and hows of implementing Free Open Source Software in libraries. He impressed on the development of staff verses the outsourcing of knowledge, the flexibility of FOSS, and the pitfalls of deep software customization.John ended with a statement that embracing FOSS can be scary, but with proper management can be a successful and vital to the long term health of libraries.
